Three Things to Consider for Your Technology in 2013

As distributors plan for the New Year, the options can become somewhat overwhelming.  Maybe you need a total software replacement.  Maybe you should consider the cloud.  Or maybe you need to invest in some major upgrades.  Here are some tips for planning your technology resolutions for the upcoming year.

  1.  Choose your ERP wisely:  Your enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is one of the most valuable tools distributors could use to organize finances, inventory, supply chain, manufacturing, and much more.  If you are using disparate software or legacy systems that are becoming cumbersome or difficult to upgrade, than maybe it’s time for a new ERP software solution.  The right ERP can streamline operations, improve productivity, and boost profitability.  The wrong ERP won’t get used properly and could give you bad data which could lead to bad business decisions.
  2. Think out of the box:  This could be the year that you investigate the benefits of cloud technology, if you aren’t in the cloud already.  Different cloud technologies and mobile devices, like Smartphones and tablets, can improve the productivity of your team when they are out of the office.  Many ERP and customer relationship management (CRM) software solutions can be used in the cloud and on mobile devices so your sales team can share up-to-the-minute product information and close deals while sitting in the customer’s office.  At the same time, they can update ERP and CRM data so you can use real-time data to make the decisions that drive business growth.
  3. New technology, new solutions:  If you can’t seem to pinpoint the proper inventory levels and end up spending too much cash in over-stock, or if your stock-outs and back orders are an issue, then a robust inventory management module might be a good add-on to your ERP.  If you were intending to streamline the way your warehouse is organized or improve the productivity of pick-and-ship procedures, then maybe a warehouse management system is what you need.  The right technology can solve common challenges faced by distributors.
