Efficiency and Environmental Performance in the Supply Chain

Email | Print

How would you like to save money, strengthen your supply chain, and benefit the environment all at the same time?  Let’s take a look at Walgreens who was recently recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a leader for freight supply chain efficiency and environmental performance, and awarded the 2012 SmartWay Excellence Award for their efforts.

According to “Walgreens Named Top Performer, Leader for Freight Supply Chain Efficiency and Environmental Performance,” posted on DailyFinance.com, the EPA’s second generation SmartWay program offered quantification and reporting tools for businesses to use with monitoring and tracking freight operations.  As data is collected, businesses can determine ways to improve supply chain efficiency, reduce emissions, as well as save money and reduce their carbon footprint.  Walgreens was able to use their information to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 15% between 2010 and 2011. They were able to optimize truck routes, lower the number of empty miles (when there was no products being hauled), and found other ways to boost freight productivity.  As a result, Walgreens improved fuel efficiency, lowered freight-related costs, and reduced emissions.

You don’t need the EPA’s software to guide you through strengthening supply chain and freight operation performance; you can use enterprise resource planning (ERP) software solutions, such as Microsoft Dynamics® GP.  This comprehensive software solution will integrate your operations so you can collect and analyze the data you need to optimize your own operations.  Microsoft Dynamics GP will help you manage finances, manufacturing, supply chain, project and services management, human resources and payroll, as well as provide powerful business intelligence and reporting.  You can track performance, monitor metrics, and use your real-time data to improve productivity and streamline operations.  Set up notifications to alert you when metrics are being met, or exceeded, so you can take quick action to stay on track toward meeting your strategic goals.

Walgreens was able to streamline freight operations by finding new ways to get their products to customers with greater efficiency.  They saved money in fuel costs, which had the added benefit of reducing their carbon emissions.  Using ERP software also can help you reach similar goals.  Monitoring certain metrics will provide actionable insight that you can use to create goals, improve productivity and reduce costs.  Contact The Resource Group for more information about using Microsoft Dynamics GP to improve the performance and efficiency of your supply chain.
